If that account is compromised, an attacker may inherit the same authority.

This is why privileged access management (PAM) requires more than storing administrator passwords in an encrypted vault. Organizations need to control who can use privileged credentials, when access is granted, which systems can be reached, and what happens during an administrative session.

The challenge has become more complicated as infrastructure has expanded beyond traditional data centers. IT teams now manage Windows and Linux servers, cloud consoles, Kubernetes clusters, databases, remote contractors, service accounts, API credentials, and automated deployment pipelines. Each environment introduces different privilege boundaries and different ways for credentials to become exposed.

PAM platforms address these problems through a combination of credential vaulting, privileged session management, access approvals, just-in-time elevation, password rotation, and activity auditing. However, products that share the PAM label do not necessarily protect the same resources or use the same architecture.

The most important purchasing distinction is between controlling privileged accounts and credentials and controlling privileged access at the moment an action occurs. Mature organizations may need both.

Privileged Access Management (PAM): Platforms and Features Compared

Toggle

What PAM Must Control: Accounts, Sessions, and Temporary Privileges

Privileged credential vaulting

Privileged session management

Just-in-time privileged access

Endpoint privilege management

Secrets and non-human identity management

Comparing Established PAM Platforms and Specialized Alternatives

1. id="What_PAM_Must_Control_Accounts_Sessions_and_Temporary_Privileges">What PAM Must Control: Accounts, Sessions, and Temporary Privileges

Privileged access management is a security discipline that protects accounts and identities with elevated permissions. These identities may belong to human administrators, applications, automated services, infrastructure components, or external contractors.

A conventional user account might allow an employee to read documents or access a business application. A privileged account can perform operations with much broader consequences, such as changing access policies, installing software, modifying databases, or managing cloud infrastructure.

PAM attempts to reduce the exposure created by these permissions through several interconnected controls.

Privileged credential vaulting

A privileged credential vault stores sensitive credentials in a centrally controlled repository.

Instead of distributing administrator passwords through email, spreadsheets, shared documents, or messaging applications, administrators retrieve or use credentials through an authorized access workflow.

Depending on the platform, vault capabilities can include:

Encrypted storage of privileged passwords.

SSH private-key management.

Automated password rotation.

Credential discovery and onboarding.

Role-based access to stored credentials.

Credential checkout and expiration.

Secure sharing without revealing the underlying password.

Vaulting is especially useful for legacy infrastructure that still depends on shared or static administrator credentials.

However, storing a password securely does not automatically control what an administrator does after logging in.

Privileged session management

Privileged session management controls the connection between an authorized user and a sensitive system.

A PAM gateway or proxy can mediate SSH, RDP, database, and other supported connections. This allows the organization to enforce access policies and collect session evidence.

Important capabilities include:

Session recording and playback.

Real-time session monitoring.

Connection approval.

File-transfer restrictions.

Session termination.

Command or activity monitoring.

Audit-log export.

Consider a contractor who needs temporary access to a production Linux server. Rather than receiving the root password, the contractor connects through a controlled gateway. The organization can authorize the connection, record the session, and terminate access when the work is complete.

The distinction matters because credential rotation alone cannot establish what happened during an administrative session.

Just-in-time privileged access

Just-in-time (JIT) access replaces permanent administrative permissions with temporary elevation.

A user receives the ability to perform a privileged task only when an approved requirement exists.

For example, a database administrator might be eligible to activate a production administration role but not hold that role continuously. The administrator requests elevation, supplies a business justification, completes MFA, and receives permission for a defined period.

When the access window expires, the elevated permission is removed.

Microsoft Entra Privileged Identity Management documents this model through eligible and active role assignments, time-limited access, approval requirements, and MFA during activation. Microsoft Learn+1

JIT access is particularly valuable for cloud infrastructure, where excessive standing permissions can create a large attack surface.

Endpoint privilege management

Not all privileged access involves logging into a remote server.

An employee’s workstation may have unnecessary local administrator rights, allowing software installation, system changes, or potentially dangerous processes.

Endpoint privilege management removes unnecessary permanent administrative rights and grants controlled elevation for approved applications or tasks.

For example, a developer may need permission to install a specific diagnostic utility without receiving unrestricted local administrator privileges.

This capability is related to PAM but is not interchangeable with enterprise credential vaulting or privileged session recording.

Secrets and non-human identity management

Modern infrastructure relies on credentials that are not directly associated with people.

Examples include:

Database connection passwords.

API tokens.

SSH deployment keys.

Cloud service credentials.

Kubernetes secrets.

CI/CD pipeline credentials.

Application certificates.

Service-account passwords.

These credentials are often called secrets or non-human identity credentials.

A conventional PAM vault may store some of them, but application workloads frequently require automatic retrieval, short-lived credentials, rotation, and API-based access.

This is where dedicated secrets-management platforms complement traditional PAM.

The distinction is important: an administrator logging into a server and an application requesting a temporary database credential are different access workflows, even if both involve privileged information.

Comparing Established PAM Platforms and Specialized Alternatives

The products below represent different approaches to privileged access control. Some concentrate on enterprise credential vaulting and session governance, while others emphasize infrastructure access, cloud role activation, or machine secrets.

They should be evaluated according to the systems and identities an organization actually needs to protect.

1. CyberArk Privileged Access Management

Enterprise credential security and privileged identity governance

CyberArk is an established name in enterprise privileged access management. Its platform approach is relevant to organizations managing large numbers of administrator accounts, service identities, infrastructure credentials, and sensitive sessions.

Its privileged access capabilities include credential vaulting, privileged session management, access governance, and controls for privileged identities.

The central value of this architecture is centralized control over privileged credentials that might otherwise be distributed across infrastructure teams.

For organizations operating complex hybrid environments, the evaluation should concentrate on how credentials are discovered, onboarded, rotated, and made available to authorized users.

Session monitoring also deserves attention. A vault can control who retrieves a credential, but a session-management layer provides additional visibility into what happens after access is granted.

CyberArk is worth evaluating when privileged access spans multiple infrastructure environments and security teams need centralized governance.

The main purchasing consideration is implementation complexity. Large PAM deployments require careful integration with directories, target systems, authentication infrastructure, operational workflows, and existing security monitoring.

Organizations should also examine licensing boundaries between the different modules rather than assuming every capability is included in one package.

2. BeyondTrust

Privileged passwords, remote access, and endpoint privilege control

BeyondTrust has a broad portfolio covering several distinct PAM requirements.

Its Password Safe product focuses on privileged account discovery, credential management, and password rotation. Privileged Remote Access addresses controlled connections for administrators, contractors, and third-party vendors. Endpoint Privilege Management focuses on removing unnecessary endpoint administrator rights and controlling elevation.

This separation is important.

An organization that needs to secure remote vendor sessions may prioritize Privileged Remote Access, while another that wants to reduce local administrator privileges across employee workstations may focus on Endpoint Privilege Management.

BeyondTrust also documents integrations with identity providers and SIEM platforms, allowing privileged activity to be connected with broader security operations. docs.beyondtrust.com+1

The practical advantage is the ability to address different privilege risks through related products.

The trade-off is that buyers must understand the product boundaries, deployment requirements, and licensing structure. Purchasing one component should not be mistaken for implementing every aspect of the broader PAM discipline.

3. Delinea Secret Server

Privileged password management across hybrid environments

Delinea Secret Server is centered on enterprise privileged password management.

It is relevant to organizations that need to discover, store, manage, and rotate privileged credentials across servers, applications, and administrative infrastructure.

Its broader platform documentation also covers identity federation, privileged remote access, and privilege control for servers.

One useful consideration is deployment flexibility. Delinea documents both cloud and on-premises options for parts of its privileged access portfolio, which can matter when infrastructure or regulatory requirements restrict where management services operate. Delinea

Secret Server is worth considering when the primary problem is controlling privileged account credentials rather than replacing an entire infrastructure-access architecture.

Buyers should examine how it handles credential discovery, password rotation, session recording, application dependencies, and disaster recovery.

A particularly important implementation issue is service-account rotation. Changing a password without updating dependent applications and scheduled tasks can interrupt production services. The rotation workflow must therefore account for credential dependencies, not just password strength.

4. One Identity Safeguard

Privileged session governance and controlled administrative access

One Identity Safeguard is a relevant option for organizations that need centralized oversight of privileged accounts and administrative sessions.

Its approach is particularly worth examining where access requests, approvals, session monitoring, and audit evidence form part of formal security governance.

For regulated or highly controlled environments, the value of PAM is not limited to protecting passwords. Security teams also need to establish who authorized access, which resource was accessed, and whether the activity can be reviewed later.

Safeguard should be evaluated against the organization’s requirements for session recording, credential management, approval workflows, and integration with identity infrastructure.

Its suitability will depend on the systems that need coverage and how the organization intends to operate the platform.

A useful pilot should include both ordinary administrator access and exceptional scenarios, such as emergency access, vendor support, and account recovery.

5. ManageEngine PAM360

Integrated privileged account management and infrastructure administration

PAM360 combines several capabilities that organizations often purchase from separate administrative security tools.

Its documented functionality includes privileged credential discovery, enterprise password vaulting, secure remote access, session monitoring, SSH key management, privilege elevation, and application credential security.

It also provides integration options for SIEM platforms, ticketing workflows, APIs, and development environments. ManageEngine PAM360+1

One notable consideration is its broader IT administration orientation. Organizations already using ManageEngine products may find it useful to investigate how PAM360 fits into their existing operational workflows.

The product also has a free edition with restricted capacity, making it possible to evaluate certain deployment scenarios without immediately committing to enterprise licensing. Its documented free edition is limited to one administrator managing up to ten resources. FAQs

However, a small free deployment should not be treated as evidence that the enterprise edition will meet every governance requirement.

Buyers should verify high-availability architecture, integrations, resource limits, and the exact licensing needed for advanced controls.

6. KeeperPAM

Cloud-based privileged access and integrated secrets management

KeeperPAM takes a consolidated approach to privileged access.

Its documented capabilities span enterprise password management, secrets management, privileged session management, remote connections, and endpoint privilege management.

The platform supports credential rotation, session recording and playback, resource discovery, role-based policies, and SIEM integration. Its documentation also describes gateways deployed on Docker, Linux, and Windows environments. Keeper Documentation+1

This architecture is relevant to organizations that want to bring employee credentials, infrastructure access, and machine secrets into a related security platform.

KeeperPAM is worth evaluating when cloud-based administration and integration between credential storage and controlled connections are priorities.

The important questions are whether its resource coverage matches the organization’s infrastructure and whether its gateway deployment model meets network segmentation and operational requirements.

Buyers should also distinguish between advertised platform capabilities and the features included in the specific subscription or deployment arrangement.

7. Teleport

Identity-based access to servers, databases, Kubernetes, and applications

Teleport represents a more infrastructure-oriented approach to privileged access.

Rather than concentrating exclusively on storing and distributing long-lived administrator passwords, it uses identity-based access and short-lived certificates to connect users to protected resources.

Its documentation covers SSH servers, Kubernetes clusters, databases, internal applications, and desktops. Access policies can be tied to identity providers, while session activity is logged for auditing. Teleport+1

This approach is particularly relevant to DevOps and platform engineering teams managing distributed infrastructure.

Short-lived credentials reduce the need to distribute permanent SSH keys or maintain large collections of long-lived access credentials.

Teleport also offers a Community Edition alongside enterprise cloud and self-hosted options. The available feature set differs by edition, so buyers should check the feature matrix before treating the community edition as a replacement for an enterprise PAM deployment. Teleport+1

Its principal distinction is infrastructure access rather than being a universal replacement for traditional enterprise password vaulting, endpoint elevation, and legacy privileged-account governance.

8. Microsoft Entra Privileged Identity Management

Just-in-time access to Microsoft identity and cloud roles

Microsoft Entra Privileged Identity Management (PIM) addresses a specific but important PAM problem: users should not hold powerful cloud and directory roles permanently when those privileges are needed only occasionally.

Administrators can receive eligible role assignments and activate them when required.

Activation policies can require MFA, business justification, approval, notifications, and time-limited access.

Microsoft documents PIM support for Microsoft Entra roles and Azure resource roles, with licensing requirements that should be checked before deployment. Microsoft Learn+2

For organizations already operating within Microsoft Entra and Azure, this provides a native way to reduce standing administrative permissions.

Its scope is also its main limitation.

PIM should not automatically be considered a full replacement for a dedicated PAM platform that must manage legacy Windows and Unix accounts, third-party vendor sessions, privileged password rotation, or session recording across heterogeneous infrastructure.

9. HashiCorp Vault

Dynamic secrets and machine credential lifecycle management

HashiCorp Vault, now part of IBM’s portfolio, is an important complementary technology in a PAM architecture.

Its primary specialization is secrets management rather than conventional human administrator session governance.

Vault can store static secrets, generate dynamic credentials, manage certificates, and control access to sensitive data through authentication and policy mechanisms.

Dynamic secrets are particularly useful for applications that should not rely on permanent database passwords or long-lived cloud credentials.

For example, an application can request a database credential for a limited period and allow the secret-management system to manage its lifecycle. HashiCorp Developer

This makes Vault relevant to DevOps, platform engineering, and cloud infrastructure teams.

However, it should not be confused with a complete traditional PAM suite. Organizations needing interactive administrator session recording, remote vendor access, and enterprise privileged password checkout may require additional products.

Vault is most useful when machine-to-machine credential security is a significant part of the organization’s privilege-management problem.

How These Platforms Differ in Practice

The following comparison emphasizes architectural specialization rather than attempting to rank products with platform that manages cloud role activation does not necessarily provide privileged password rotation, while a secrets-management platform does not necessarily provide interactive session recording.

An organization with complex infrastructure may need multiple complementary technologies rather than one product claiming to cover every privilege-related requirement.

The Architectural Decision: Vault-Centric PAM or Identity-Based Access?

The most consequential PAM purchasing decision is often architectural rather than functional.

Two platforms may advertise credential protection, access policies, and audit logging while using fundamentally different methods to enforce them.

Vault-centric architecture

Traditional PAM platforms typically place privileged credentials inside a centralized vault.

An administrator authenticates to the PAM system, receives permission to access a credential or initiates a mediated connection, and performs an authorized task.

The platform can enforce credential checkout policies, rotate passwords, and record supported sessions.

Protected infrastructureServers, databases, and administrative systems

This architecture is particularly relevant when an organization has many existing systems that depend on static passwords, shared administrator accounts, and traditional remote-access protocols.

Its main challenge is coverage. Every important account and access route must be discovered, onboarded, and governed. Credentials that remain outside the vault can become security blind spots.

Identity-based and just-in-time architecture

Modern infrastructure access platforms can use short-lived certificates, federated identities, and temporary permissions rather than distributing persistent credentials to every administrator.

A user authenticates through an identity provider, receives authorization for a particular resource, and establishes a controlled connection.

Typical access flow

Central identity providerSSO, MFA, and user identity

Authorization policyRole, resource, context, and access duration

Temporary access credentialShort-lived certificate or permission

Protected infrastructureAudited SSH, database, or Kubernetes access

This model is attractive for cloud-native environments, where workloads are dynamic and infrastructure changes frequently.

It can reduce persistent credential exposure, but it introduces dependencies on identity-provider availability, certificate issuance, policy configuration, and access infrastructure.

Why many organizations need both

A company might use traditional PAM to control domain administrator passwords and Windows server sessions while using identity-based access for Kubernetes clusters and cloud databases.

A separate secrets-management platform might issue temporary database credentials to applications.

These are not necessarily redundant deployments. Each addresses a different credential or authorization problem.

The goal should be to establish consistent privilege governance without forcing every workload through an architecture designed for a different environment.

What to Evaluate Before Buying a PAM Platform

A product demonstration can make credential vaulting and session recording look straightforward. Real implementation depends on how the platform interacts with existing systems.

The following requirements deserve particular attention.

Discovery and onboarding coverage

PAM implementation often begins with discovering privileged accounts that nobody has formally inventoried.

These can include:

Windows domain administrator accounts.

Local administrator accounts.

Linux root and sudo-enabled accounts.

Database administrator credentials.

SSH keys.

Service accounts.

Application credentials.

Cloud administrator roles.

Emergency or break-glass accounts.

A vendor should explain how its discovery process works, which systems require agents, and how credentials are onboarded.

Ask whether discovery identifies only accounts or also their dependencies, ownership, usage patterns, and rotation requirements.

An inventory that identifies an account but cannot determine which production service depends on it may be insufficient for safe credential rotation.

Credential rotation without service disruption

Automated rotation is one of the most valuable PAM capabilities, but it must be implemented carefully.

Consider a service account used by several applications. They may exist inside scripts, application configuration files, deployment pipelines, scheduled tasks, and infrastructure automation.

If these identities are excluded, the PAM deployment may protect employees while leaving critical application credentials exposed.

Rotating credentials without dependency mapping

A password change can disrupt systems that depend on the original credential.

Map application dependencies before enabling broad automated rotation. review schedules.

An exception that remains permanently active without monitoring can become a privileged access blind spot.

<h3 recording indefinitely increases storage requirements and can create additional privacy and information-governance concerns.

Organizations should define retention, encryption, access restrictions, investigation procedures, and deletion policies before enabling recording broadly.

Compliance, Data Residency, and Operational Responsibility

PAM can support security governance and provide evidence for internal and external audits, but purchasing a platform does not automatically establish regulatory compliance.

The organization remains responsible for configuring controls, assigning ownership, reviewing access, and maintaining appropriate evidence.

For organizations operating in India, procurement teams should consider applicable requirements under the Digital Personal Data Protection framework, relevant CERT-In directions, contractual security obligations, and sector-specific regulatory expectations where applicable.

International businesses may also need to consider GDPR, financial-sector requirements, and contractual data-residency commitments.

These obligations should be evaluated against the actual deployment architecture.

Questions worth addressing include:

Where are privileged session recordings stored?

Which country or region hosts the management control plane?

Can customer-managed encryption keys be used?

Which support personnel can access operational data?

How are security events retained and exported?

Can access be restricted by geography or network?

What happens to stored recordings and credentials when a contract ends?

A cloud-hosted PAM platform may reduce infrastructure maintenance, but the organization still needs to understand the provider’s security responsibilities and data-handling arrangements.

Self-hosted deployment offers more direct infrastructure control while transferring additional maintenance, patching, monitoring, backup, and availability responsibilities to the customer.

Neither model is automatically more secure.

A Practical PAM Deployment Strategy

Rather than migrating every privileged account simultaneously, organizations can build PAM coverage in stages.

Stage 1: Establish the privileged identity inventory

Identify administrative users, shared accounts, service accounts, SSH keys, database credentials, cloud roles, and third-party access routes.

Prioritize identities with broad access to production systems and sensitive information.

Stage 2: Secure the most consequential credentials

Bring high-risk administrator credentials into a controlled vault.

Introduce unique credentials where possible, enable MFA, and remove unnecessary shared-password practices.

Stage 3: Introduce controlled sessions

Route supported administrative connections through PAM gateways or session-management components.

Start with systems where session visibility and accountability provide the greatest benefit.

Stage 4: Reduce standing privileges

Move eligible administrators toward time-limited access.

Introduce approvals and justifications for sensitive operations, while maintaining carefully controlled emergency procedures.

Stage 5: Extend protection to machine identities

Address service accounts, application credentials, deployment secrets, SSH keys, and cloud workload identities.

Use dedicated secrets-management mechanisms when application workflows require dynamic credential issuance.

Stage 6: Integrate monitoring and governance

Export relevant events to the SIEM, review access policies, monitor exceptions, and establish periodic entitlement reviews.

A successful deployment should produce measurable operational improvements, such as fewer unmanaged privileged accounts, fewer permanent administrator assignments, more complete session coverage, and faster revocation of unnecessary access.

The objective is not to maximize the number of PAM features enabled. It is to reduce the number of privileged access paths that operate without adequate authorization and visibility.

Questions to Ask During a PAM Vendor Evaluation

Before selecting a platform, security and infrastructure teams should request clear answers to several implementation-specific questions.

Which Windows, Linux, database, network, and cloud platforms are supported?

How does privileged account discovery work?

Can the platform rotate passwords without disrupting dependent applications?

Which protocols support session recording and playback?

Can administrators access systems without seeing the underlying credentials?

Does the platform support just-in-time elevation and automatic revocation?

How are SSH keys, API tokens, and machine identities managed?

Which identity providers and SIEM products have supported integrations?

Can access policies be managed through APIs or infrastructure-as-code workflows?

How does the platform handle emergency access if its management service becomes unavailable?

Which capabilities require additional modules or licenses?

Where are credentials, logs, and session recordings stored?

How are backups, upgrades, and disaster recovery handled?

Can the organization export its credentials, audit records, and configuration when changing providers?

A particularly useful proof-of-concept exercise is to onboard one representative Windows server, one Linux server, and one database. Test credential discovery, access approval, session recording, password rotation, and emergency recovery.

For cloud-native teams, add a Kubernetes cluster and a workload that needs temporary database credentials.

This reveals whether the proposed platform can support the actual environment instead of merely demonstrating a polished administrative dashboard.

Choosing a PAM Platform That Matches Your Infrastructure

There is no single PAM architecture that suits every organization.

The right choice depends on where privileged credentials exist, how administrators connect to critical systems, and whether the main risk comes from permanent permissions, exposed passwords, uncontrolled sessions, or machine credentials.

For large enterprises with extensive legacy infrastructure, CyberArk, BeyondTrust, Delinea, and One Identity deserve consideration for their enterprise privileged-access capabilities.

ManageEngine PAM360 is worth evaluating when centralized credential management, session monitoring, and broader IT administration are important. KeeperPAM offers a consolidated cloud-based approach, while Teleport is particularly relevant to infrastructure teams working with SSH, databases, and Kubernetes.

Microsoft Entra PIM is a natural starting point for organizations concentrating on temporary Microsoft cloud and directory permissions. HashiCorp Vault complements these platforms when applications and automated workloads need controlled access to secrets and dynamic credentials.

The most important distinction is between protecting a privileged credential and controlling the authority it provides. A password vault addresses the first problem; session governance, least privilege, JIT access, and machine identity controls address the broader problem.

Before committing to a platform, conduct a proof of concept using representative production workflows. Verify that privileged accounts can be discovered, credentials can be rotated safely, sessions can be audited, unnecessary permissions can be revoked, and emergency access remains possible.

A PAM deployment is effective only when it covers the privileged access paths that administrators, applications, contractors, and automated systems actually use.

An administrator account can change firewall policies, create cloud identities, modify production databases, disable security controls, and access sensitive business […]

[1
1827,1834,1823,1835,1732,1836,1833,1541,1764,1830,1838,1831,1839,1841,1837,1824,1814,1776,1825,1826,1828,1542,1832,1840,1829
post-2129","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-access-governance","tag-beyondtrust","tag-credential-management","tag-cyberark","tag-cybersecurity-2","tag-delinea","tag-endpoint-privilege-management","tag-hashicorp-vault","tag-identity-security","tag-just-in-time-access","tag-keeperpam","tag-least-privilege","tag-manageengine-pam360","tag-microsoft-entra-pim","tag-one-identity","tag-pam-software","tag-password-vault","tag-privileged-access-management","tag-privileged-account-management","tag-privileged-identity-management","tag-privileged-session-management","tag-secrets-management","tag-ssh-key-management","tag-teleport","tag-zero-trust-security
["GET
